As a fellow bisexual woman, I've got a few hate messages saying some things among the lines of ''bisexual people are just transphobic pansexuals'', what's your opinion on that?

One thing though that bothers me is that there are a lot of bisexuals who would identify as pansexual if they knew about non-binary people / that there is beyond male and female. A lot of bisexuals style themselves as “gender doesn’t matter” type of people, which is closer to pansexual than bisexual. I don’t think it’s that there are a lot of transphobic bisexuals, but that a lot of bisexuals aren’t that aware about gender.

Saying you could define yourself as either pansexual or bisexual doesn’t make sense to me because they simply aren’t the same thing. However, I totally understand with identifying as bisexual because it’s more known about and therefore doesn’t require explanation.

Ultimately, I think a lot of trans people see bisexual people saying that bisexual means “attracted to men and women” which is nonbinary erasure and therefore transphobic — it’s not the correct definition, but ask bisexual people outside of tumblr how they define it, and you’ll see what I mean.

You’re missing the point.

For many of us Bisexual has always included trans people. We are suddenly being told we should identify as pan instead of bi. Our identity is suddenly being dictated by others while being told we are transphobic. We are told the definition we have been using for years (in my case for more than 15 years) is no longer valid and we need to use another one or we are horrible people.

I’ve met many bi people, most long before Tumblr existed, including bi people who have been activists for longer than I and probably you have been alive and most use a form of the following definition for bisexuality:

the potential to be attracted—romantically and/or sexually—to people of more than one sex and/or gender, not necessarily at the same time, not necessarily in the same way, and not necessarily to the same degree.

Some adjusted the definition for themselves, the same way straight, gay and lesbian people have, to exclude or include trans people.

And yes, like many straight, gay and lesbian people, not all bi people are aware of gender, but bisexuals are punished the most for it while they are in general the one most open to a relationship with trans people.

To tell bisexual people they have to identify as pansexual is a horrible thing and makes me more determined to keep using bisexual to label myself.

I don’t agree with dictating someone’s identity, so I apologize if that’s the way it came off. And I agree that bisexuals have, historically, been better allies than gays and certainly straights, but I still contend that there’s a lot of problems in the mainstream discourse on bisexuality that fuels this ignorance about gender. And bisexual people don’t have to — in no way am I implying all bisexual people are pansexual and I certainly would not imply they should be forced to identify in a way. I used to identify as bisexual before I realized pansexuality was a sexuality that was not the same thing as bisexuality. I don’t understand how someone could identify as both bisexual and pansexual, outside of political/convenience reasons, which isn’t inherently a bad thing because we’re ultimately political people, but still belies the fact they aren’t the same. Correct me if I’m wrong, but you do seem to prefer identifying as bisexual because it’s more broadly known about and your determined to prove bisexuality isn’t wrong (which is a good cause!), but that’s a mixture of politics and identity. And what I’m saying is that there are some bisexual people who might identify as pansexual if they knew about it, which doesn’t seem in it and of itself incompatible with your points, except for the fact you try to frame it as if though I’d force people to change labels.

Sorry for butting in, but may I answer your questions?

claudiaboleyn:

My opinion is that the pansexual vs bisexual thing has to end. It’s so petty and pointless and when we’re divided, it stops us from focussing on the real issues like bi and pan erasure, and y’know, general human rights.

Bisexuals and pansexuals should be friends. We’re very similar. Some of us even define ourselves in exactly the same way.

Being bisexual isn’t transphobic because the most broadly used definition of bisexuality is: attraction to same and different genders or attraction to more than one gender.

Trans people don’t have their own special category. Trans men are men. Trans women are women.

When I say I’m attracted to women, I mean women. Obviously including trans women.

When I say I’m attracted to men, I mean men. Obviously including trans men.

When I say I am attracted to non-binary people, I mean exactly that.

I don’t think it’s a difficult concept for people to grasp, so I think this argument is rooted in biphobia, not in concern for the trans community.

Bisexuality is not problematic by definition. Sure, there are going to be individual bisexuals that are transphobic but there are bad eggs in just about every group in the world. This isn’t a problem unique to the bi community, and to frame it like that is just plain biphobia.

I could define myself as pansexual or bisexual. Most bisexuals probably could. I chose bisexuality because it is more broadly known about, and I am very determined to show people that bisexuality isn’t wrong. I refuse to not call myself bisexual because biphobic people are uncomfortable with the term for bigoted, unfounded, and ignorant reasons.

Seriously, why are we hating on each other? We’re supposed to be a community. We get enough hate and abuse from the outside world. We don’t need this pointless bullshit on top of all that.

Both dweo and me are probably from a different generation generation than most of current tumblr sjw bloggers. So imagine this: you’re growing up and as a teenager you realise your sexual interest goes beyond one gender. If you’re lucky, you find out there is such a thing as bisexuality, which means ‘all of the above’, which means gender does not matter to you or you could potentially have a partner of any gender. Great! You’ve found what you are. For the next 10, 15, 20 years you go along fighting for your rights, fighting against biphobia, taking shit from both the straight as well as the gay community. Finally you feel there is a slight change starting up: more people are welcoming, more people are cool with your sexuality, there is even a tiny bit or representation in the media for your kind.

Then someone coins a new term. Pansexuality is the great new thing! It means you like all genders! You’re confused. Wasn’t that bisexuality? Wasn’t that you?

No, you are told, bi means two, so it clearly means you only like two genders!

Wait, you sputter, no, that’s not the definition, where even did you get that definition? To me it just means not straight or gay, it means all of the above.

All of the above?! they hiss, as bi = two, you are implying that there are only two genders, you transphobic scum!

What? Transphobic? HOw? Isn’t a trans woman a woman? Isn’t a trans man a man? Would it be transphobic of me to can a trans man a man?

Aha! So you just hate non-binary people!

What?! I already told you, your definition of bisexual is wrong. Gender is unemportant to me, I can see myself potentially with a person of any (or no) gender.

Well, you see, we’ve changed the definition of bisexual. You’re supposed to call yourself pansexual now. We have changed the definition of a word you’ve used for the better part of your life to identify yourself with, fight for, and get abused for. I don’t understand why you’re being so difficult. Jeez, why would a pansexual identify as bisexual when they are clearly wrong? Oh by the way, I’m still trying to figure out what my gender is, you know a name and pronouns I feel most comfortable with, the ones that describe me best. Please try to keep up while I try different things out and don’t misgender me.

Do you see at all how this is both hypocritical and incredibly hurtful?

This is something that’s happening, not some thought exercise. This is an issue a lot of bisexuals have to deal with. We are erased by hetero- and homosexuals and now also told by many non-binary people (and others) we must change our label, the one we fought for for years, because they say it does not mean what we, the actual bisxuals, think it means.

I understand you’re (as in you pre-post-modernism)  not telling us to change and identify as pansexual, but that bit of your post I cited at the beginning of my reply? Yeah, that practically breathes the attitude I tried to show above. It’s kind of sad that you literally say you don’t understand why someone would identify as bisexual when they are clearly pansexual shows a great lack of empathy and a disregard of any other view outside of your own.
